Spencer House Seniors Activity Centre is as busy as ever. We are located at 5596 Morris Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 1C2 and are a public access terminal, for seniors, for the Chubecto Community Net. This means that if you are aged fifty five plus you are welcome to drop in and use the computer to surf the internet. We do have a log book, and you can phone in and reserve the computer ahead of time. There is no fee with the exception of purchasing an account number with the Chubecto Community Net.
At Spencer House we are pleased to have dedicated volunteers who will assist you surfing the net. Joe and Judy are available on Wednesdays from 10:00am - 2:00pm for individual support, unless we are having a workshop. Beginners workshops take place the third Wednesday of the month at 1:00pm. Registration in advance is necesary. Gary, our third dedicated volunteer will be here Thursday, October 19 at 1:30 to facilitate a refresher internet workshop. Again, registration in advance is necessary as space is limited. Please call 421-6131 for info or e-mail me at af088@ccn·cs·dal·ca. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers. Your help is what makes our programs successful. Thank you!
The Kermit Club gives those of you who are interested a chance to drop in, socialize, and surf the net if you like. All are welcome and there is no charge. Drop in the third Saturday each month after 1:00pm.
By now many of you must be hooked on the net and interested in purchasing computer equipment. At Spencer House we will soon be organizing a "Computer Equipment Demonstration" to be held on a Saturday afternoon. Please let me know if there is specific computer, and/or software that interets you. I will announce more details as information becomes available.
Recently I was corresponding with Robert Matte, Planning Officer with the Division of Aging and Seniors, Health Canada. Robert explained that the Seniors Independence Program of Health Canada funded the Seniors Computer Information Program. The following is their web site "http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/crm". There you should be able to find a copy of Joyce Post's "Internet and E-Mail resources on Aging." If the article is not available there try "http://moondog.usask.ca:80/pinnacles/post.html".
Oh yes, you are welcome to drop in to Spencer House. We are a drop in centre, no one lives here although our name leaves you with that impression. We serve a home made meal, Monday through Friday at noon, for only $3.00. Reservations are not necessary unless we are serving a special lunch such as Thanksgiving or Christmas. Call us at 421-6131 for more info.
Bye for now and happy surfing! Let me know if you find anything interesting!
