For further understanding of the context of human consciousness in relation to systemic theory and evolution of living systems see the Whole Systems Change section of the Website. Institute of Noetic Sciences
The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), founded in 1973, is a research foundation, an educational institution, and a membership organization with more than 50,000 members around the world. The noetic sciences study the mind and its diverse ways of knowing in a truly interdisciplinary fashion --Adapted from the IONS website--(One of the founders of IONS was Willis Harman who passed away in the summer of 1997 - a great and prolific thinker, researcher, academic, writer and crusader for systemic change). Research Program of IONS
"At this unique moment in history, our societal problems are large. So must be our search for solutions. Raising fundamental questions about the apparently complementary relationship between subjective and objective worlds is leading to new paradigms for understanding ourselves and our place within the universe. Exploring this new frontier of consciousness, with rigor and discernment, is the goal of The Institute of Noetic Sciences." --From the IONS Website--

Transformative spirituality does not seek to bolster or legitimate any present worldview at all, but rather to provide true authenticity by shattering what the world takes as legitimate." --Summary from ISSS Website-- 1996 ISSS Keynote Address by Willis

"The implications of research on consciousness ... suggest
interconnection at a level that has yet to be fully recognized by Western
science, and throw into doubt the pervasive conception of a world dominated
by competition. The ontological stance of the universe
as holarchy appears to have great promise as the basis for an extended
science in which consciousness-related phenomena are no longer anomalies,
but keys to a deeper understanding; a science
that transcends and includes the science we have." --Summary

Gaiamind Project Website
Visually compelling site which serves as a useful example
of the potential of global linking of like minds. The site
was dedicated to bringing together like minds on January 23rd, 1997 when
there was an exceedingly rare and unique planetary alignment. The
site which remains also has an essay on Teilhard de Chardin and references
to his writings and is worth visiting to gain an appreciation of
the potential of the internet for uniting global consciousness and the
striking visual of the planetary alignment which was the genesis of the
Gaiamind Project.

Chaos Theory and Space-Time Patterns
Address by Ralph Abraham, Prague Castle, 20 November
1996 at a Conference of the Council of Europe. In this paper Ralph
Abraham, known as the father of chaos theory, explains his project
Operation Webwatch in which he uses chaos theory and fractal geometry to
make images of the world Wide Web which is viewed as a neural net the process
of which can be viewed as the neurogenesis of the new cultural ecology
now emerging. Here we see parallels with Teilhard's noosphere, and Russel's
Global Brain decried in other sites documented above.
Richard Tarnas: Epilogue from
The Passion of the Western Mind
Epilogue from The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas that Have Shaped Our World View by Richard Tarnas. The Epilogue is devoted to revealing the intellectual roots of the consciousness shift occurring in our civilization at this time. The final words of Tarnas: "But why has the pervasive masculinity of the Western intellectual and spiritual tradition suddenly become so apparent to us today, while it remained so invisible to almost every previous generation? I believe this is occurring only now because, as Hegel suggested, a civilization cannot become conscious of itself, cannot recognize its own significance, until it is so mature that it is approaching its own death. Today we are experiencing something that looks very much like the death of modern man, indeed that looks very much like the death of Western man. Perhaps the end of "man" himself is at hand. But man is not a goal. Man is something that must be overcome--and fulfilled, in the embrace of the feminine. " --Excerpted from the above Website-- Marion Woodman
